His Garment

Security? Protection? Comfort? Healing? That one thing as a child you couldn't do without. Was it a blanket? A teddy bear? Your favorite Transformer?

From an early age, in a world of chaos, uncertainty, and fear we reach out trying to find what fills the void. Whether it's being afraid of the dark, monsters under the bed, or night terrors; if we are without our precious relic our world becomes bleak.

Is our world that much different as adults? What have you grabbed a hold of looking for security, protection and comfort?

My son has be going through a "daddy" phase. Daddy has to do everything for him. Don't get me wrong, I am soaking every minute of it up. Just the other day I left for work and my wife told me he cried for thirty minutes. The only way she could get him to take a nap was offering him "Daddy's pillow & Daddy's shirt" to sleep with. This new routine has been on going for a week now. "Daddy's shirt", he says at bedtime. "Daddy's pillow", as he climbs into bed. What an awesome time to be a dad!

What this communicates to me as his father is simply having an article of my belongings brings him comfort, peace, rest. Even as he sleeps, a piece of me sleeps with him. Is it my smell? My soft pillow? The color of my shirt? No, it's just mine. With just a piece that brings such peace, no wonder he loves being in my presence.

And a woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her hemorrhage stopped. And Jesus said, "Who is the one who touched Me?" And while they were all denying it, Peter said, "Master, the people are crowding and pressing in on You." But Jesus said, "Someone did touch Me, for I was aware that power had gone out of Me." When the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came trembling and fell down before Him, and declared in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed. And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace."

Twelve years and no healing, no peace, no hope. In the passing presence of the Person of Peace, she reached out and simply touched the fringe of his clothing. Security! Protection! Comfort! Healing! Her faith made her well because she knew all she had to do is reach out. In a single moment she received more than she could have ever imagined.

So what is the "security blank" that we cling tightly to? Do we find our hope in relationships? In our work? In our leisure?  What have we grasped so intently that isn't filling the void? With the Presence of Peace encompassing our lives, are we reaching to another for our healing? With great faith the woman touched the fringe, while most of us find ourselves in the crowd just trying to get a peek.

For my son, just having a few of the father's possessions brought him enough peace to rest. It is our inheritance that we have all the Father possesses dwelling within us. In our world of chaos and restlessness, we find no peace because we search in the wrong places. Deep within dwells the Person of Peace, Christ Himself! Cling tightly and find rest for your soul. Sleep well my son, Daddy loves you.
