Why We Get Burned

George burns his hand on the 4th of July
Insanity
"Doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results!"

Can you relate? You know you have been there. Name your poison and I'll take it to the bank you've drank it more than once. Some of us are filled with the poison we consume and we wonder why we are experiencing death (relational, emotional, spiritual, and physical).

How do we stop the insanity? The solution may be simpler than we realize, it just depends on our perspective...

This Fourth of July was filled with Sparklers, Snakes, Snaps, and Flame Fountains for the Lynch family. A reasonably safe and child friendly fireworks display right out front of our home. The kids loved it! Starting with snaps, little George got a kick out of throwing them on the ground and hearing them pop! Then daddy brought out the Snakes and we watched the black ash rise out of nowhere. Next it was Sparkler time... time for a painful lesson.

The sparkle in George's eyes was just as bright as the Sparklers flare! Handing my son the brightly shining stick, I warned him not to touch it above the handle. The first one burned without incident as he cautiously watched the sparks turn to dim ambers. The second was waved more freely in the air as caution blew into the breeze. As I was getting ready to light the third for him I heard it.... "Ouch!" MawMaw (Gram Going) and I looked to see what happened as the tears began to roll. George had touched the hot spot and burned his little hand. It was just a small little red spot, scared him more than anything else. Nonetheless, my son learned the lesson of following daddy's instructions the hard way.
"What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, "You shall not covet."

Anyone who has kids, or has been around kids long enough, knows if you tell a child not to do something then they do it. It's the nature of our flesh and the power of the Law. The power of the Law reveals the things we should not do and the nature of the flesh becomes enticed to break that law.

But the real question comes back to perspective. Do we see the commands in the Bible as a suppressing authority trying to keep us from having fun? Or, do we see the loving instruction of a Father to His child so they don't get burned?

But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices,

Simple instruction to keep us from getting burned as a child of the Father. If you notice this verse in context, the reason we put these things aside is because it is not who we are In Christ. It is not how we have learned Christ! The Father says "My child: anger, wrath, malice, slander, abusive speech, lies, and evil practices are HOT. They will burn you."  Reading that in love, we see the Father's care and concern for our well being. Reading that in arrogance, we see a Law preventing us from some form of self-fulfillment.
 Perspective on Godisnowhere

God is nowhere
or
God is now here

The perspective we have of our relationship to the Father is paramount to our lives. If we view Him as a God that is in outer space somewhere placing ridiculous rules on us (God is no where) then we will have no regard for His command. If we see God as the loving and active Father He says He is (God is now here), we will find that His commands are simple instruction to the children whom He loves... to keep them from getting burned.

Our little guy is A O.K., but he didn't want to hold that third Sparkler. Daddy told him it was hot and he found that out the hard way. He was quickly tended to by MawMaw with sugar coated love and icepack, which quickly became a snack. The sparkle came back to his eyes as the tears were wiped away and the show continued on.
